Governance and Public Management

ADB is working with its member countries to improve governance to promote inclusive and sustainable development in the region.

  • Corporate governance

Quality governance is closely linked to economic and social development in Asia and the Pacific.

  • Local governance

Transparency and accountability are key to combating widespread corruption that holds back development in many countries.

Decentralization and e-governance have real social and economic benefits when they improve delivery of services and empower local authorities.

  • ASEAN Governance Index, 2020

In developing Asia, good governance is an important factor in advancing development.

  • Frequency of bribes for government services in Asia

Transparency is needed to help lessen the frequency of bribes for the use of government services.

  • Taking action against corruption

62% of Asians believe they can make a difference with the fight against corruption.

ADB is supporting governments in Asia and the Pacific to work more efficiently and equitably to achieve their development goals. This includes strengthening government institutions and helping improve the quality and delivery of services to the public. ADB’s governance work focuses on a number of areas, including public expenditure, economic affairs, and public administration.

Reducing systemic corruption is another priority for the bank, including strengthening key government institutions that advance transparency and accountability. ADB also assists in reforming state-owned enterprises, government decentralization, legal reform, and social protection.
